Robert's 2026 Alaska Season

Dear Clients and Friends of Blue Summit,
Another memorable season in Bristol Bay, Alaska is in the books, my 8th as skipper and my 17th total. The bay wide run came in near the forecasted total, with approximately 45 million fish returning to the watershed. Our home river of Egegik was again a standout of the five main river systems, giving us many opportunities to explore the 25 square mile district to find fish. It was one of the colder seasons in memory with many days in the high 40s. Combined with numerous 30 mph+ storms, we were glad to finally see San Diego-like weather the last few days.
A highlight this year was seeing the fruits of careful observation. Dissecting the hourly wind forecasts and how that matched with the day’s tidal curves was key. Our district drew a lot of boats this year, so paying attention to which stages of the tide offered less crowded niches also paid dividends. Everyone’s assessment of conditions and resulting decisions are very individual, and I enjoyed turning the radio down and sharpening my intuition this season.
